Traditional chemical treatment suppliers are usually
unwilling to divulge formulation information. Water Treatment
Warehouse divulges more formulation information than most. We feel that sharing
this information is consistent with our market philosophy of providing high quality
products at reasonable prices. The information we provide openly includes:
Percent Total Active Ingredients
Generic Components of Products
The strength and effectiveness of Water
Treatment Warehouse products can be compared by trial
application, or by formulation comparison in which case it is necessary to have comparable
accurate information on products being compared. As you review formulation information
from the water treatment industry you may ask why all formulations are not 100% active
ingredient. An explanation of industry standards is in order:
Biocides for cooling tower applications are available from raw material
manufacturers in specific cuts from 100% active. Rarely is 100% active product made
available to end point users due in part to handling precautions. The efficiency of some
materials as low as 1.5% active can be greater than some other materials at 100% active.
To compare biocides, the same material as well as the percent of active ingredient must be
used. Different biocides cannot be compared based on percent of active ingredient.
Cooling Tower scale and corrosion inhibitors are multi-component formulations.
The percent of active ingredient in the formulation is limited by the least soluble
component. Products are often compared based on ppm use rate, which may vary from 100 ppm
to 1500 ppm based on the formulation. The lower the ppm use rate, the less product
required to perform scale and corrosion inhibition.
At the very lowest ppm use rate, compromises in product
effectiveness may be necessary in formulating in order to maintain a uniform and
homogeneous product in shipping and storage conditions. Formulation of 100 ppm product
often involves such quality or effectiveness compromises. WTW cooling tower inhibitors are
uniformly formulated at a desired 200 ppm use rate, providing a good active ingredient
concentration which does not result in quality or effectiveness compromises. The resulting
product will contain 19.5% to 28.5% active ingredient, depending on solubilities of
components, and is directly comparable to other 200 ppm use rate products.
Closed Loop percent of active ingredient is largely limited by solubility in
formulation. Some closed loop products can be formulated dry but are rarely sold that way.
Usually the use rate of closed loop product used does not justify the inconvenience of
dealing with dry materials in this application. For large orders Water
Treatment Warehouse will special formulate
dry closed loop products.
Steam Boiler Products are furnished as either liquid or dry products. Products
which may be purchased dry include phosphates and sulfites. Dry boiler products are always
the best buy considering that they are 100% active ingredient. When using dry products it
is especially important to employ appropriate mixing equipment and follow safety
precautions when putting products into solution. Dry products properly applied and safely
handled are a bargain.
Sludge Conditioners are available in liquid or dry form. Many of
the best and most effective are only available as liquid formulations. Depending on the
application, a liquid synthetic polymer product may or may not be more effective than a
dry organic. We can assist you in making such choices.
A caution, we recommend against boiler products which include
Potassium Carbonate, Sodium Carbonate (Soda Ash), or any other carbonate or bicarbonate
components. This old technology is unnecessary in maintaining clean boiler internals, and
the byproducts of decomposition result in added CO2 in steam, aggravating return line
corrosion. Water Treatment Warehouse Boiler products
do not contain carbonate or bicarbonate materials.
Condensate Return Line formulations are generally limited in percent of active
ingredient due to flammability. A product which is often stored in or near a boiler room
needs to be limited regarding flammability. The most industry accepted standard is 40%
active ingredient or less. Water Treatment Warehouse
neutralizing amines are formulated at two concentrations: 40% and 20% active ingredient.
Forty percent active is always the most cost effective choice. Twenty percent active
products exist only as a cost effective alternate at a location currently using a 20%
active or less product.
Resin Cleaners are available both liquid and dry. Liquid and dry products
offered by Water Treatment Warehouse represent different
technologies and are not directly comparable. With resin cleaners it is usually easiest to
simply try the product and judge results.
New System Cleaner is available only dry. Liquid formulations are not cost
effective.
Inhibited Propylene Glycol is available only as 95% Propylene Glycol. Water Treatment Warehouse offers only Propylene Glycol, not
Ethylene Glycol, due to safety and discharge considerations.
If you do not need or do not greatly benefit from the
services of a sales representative, and if you want the best buy, then Water Treatment Warehouse products ARE the choice for you.
